Otto Hahn német kémikus éppen a Nobel-díj átvételére készül 1946-ban Stockholmban. Pár órával a ceremónia előtt szállodai lakosztályába betoppan Lise Meitner osztrák-svéd fizikus. Nyolc éve nem látták egymást. Akkor menekült a tudós nő zsidó származása miatt Svédországba. Előtte harminc évig a legközelebbi munkatársak és a legbizalmasabb barátok voltak Berlinben.
