Nesrine
The Franco-Algerian cellist and singer/songwriter Nesrine Belmokh first emerged in 2018 together with her trio, NES, and an impactful record crossing North African music with vocal jazz. She released her second album in 2020 as a soloist marked by her distinctive sound, with her cello playing merging North African traditions and finely textured jazz. Songs of sheer beauty unite and bring the Mediterranean region from North Africa to Southern Europe to life through music.
On her latest album, Nesrine provides further insight into her personal and musical life story. The child of Algerian parents, she grew up in France. She studied classical cello and was soon playing with ensembles such as the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra under Daniel Barenboim and the Valencia Opera Orchestra led by Lorin Maazel, as well as in a solo part in one of Cirque du Soleil's shows. Her artistic personality, however, reveals itself most clearly in the songs she has written herself, in Arabic, French and English. Almost implicitly, her musical world knows no boundaries: the combination of the cello and her powerful vocals, as well as the interplay between her North African roots and her European simply radiate from her compositions. Her understated style of expression, foundation in classical music and the varicoloured culture she brings from her home life combine with the worlds of pop and jazz. Her music is a reflection of her generation, for whom origins and stylistic boundaries are defined only through the interplay of interactions. It is undeniably natural music, for it comes entirely from Nesrine herself.
